Fleet Video Monitoring: Preventing risk, fraud, and delays with smart in-vehicle cameras
In-vehicle video monitoring is fast becoming a staple of proactive fleet risk management. Connected cameras not only help fleets monitor and improve driver behaviour, but also provide vital evidence when incidents occur - enabling fast claims decision-making, accurate liability assessment, and better protection for both drivers and their employers.
For more than 20 years, sopp+sopp have worked with some of the UK’s best-known fleets to deliver intelligent accident management solutions - encompassing everything from incident reporting, to emergency response, claims management, and best-quality vehicle repair.
We help fleets to keep their vehicles moving safely, consistently, and cost-effectively - and respond to risks and exceptions with a focus on reputational protection.
Our in-house fleet video monitoring solution is trusted by household brands across the UK. Our skilled teams harness live and event-triggered video to respond to incidents swiftly, identify causation and severity, and deliver decisive support that protects drivers and supports claims outcomes.
Here we explore how in-vehicle video monitoring can be deployed by fleets, and the tangible benefits it brings to risk management, driver safety, and claims performance.
What is Fleet Video Monitoring?
Fleet video monitoring involves fitting vehicles with connected cameras, typically front-facing dashcams - and often supported by side, rear, or in-cab cameras - to capture what’s happening in and around the vehicle during every journey.
sopp+sopp’s video monitoring service uses this technology to review incident footage when an event is automatically triggered (such as harsh braking or collision), or when an incident is reported by the driver or a third party. The recorded footage is reviewed by our team to understand exactly what occurred, assess driver safety, and support liability decisions.
By providing a clear visual account of events, fleet video monitoring helps ensure safety issues are addressed promptly and claims can be handled with confidence.
The benefits of real-time fleet video monitoring
Faster, Evidence-Based Incident Reporting
Video footage helps build a complete picture of an incident as soon as it happens. Whether a driver reports it or the system is triggered automatically, footage is reviewed promptly, providing clear, visual insight to inform FNOL and speed up the response.
Clear Liability Assessment
Access to multi-angle camera views gives fleet teams the tools to establish what really happened - helping to clarify responsibility, support drivers, and reduce time spent on disputed claims.
Enhanced Driver Safety
On-board telematics automatically detect a collision or incident, triggering a notification to our team, who review the footage immediately to ensure the driver is safe, and take swift action if necessary. This ensures serious incidents are detected immediately, supporting driver welfare at the most crucial times.
Lower Claims Costs & more Defensibility
Footage from in-vehicle cameras can reduce fraudulent or exaggerated third-party claims, while also providing rapid, accurate evidence to reduce handling time. This protects claims budgets and strengthens the fleet’s insurance profile.
Lone Driver Safety Monitoring
Drivers working alone or in high-risk environments can activate a Lone Driver alert when they feel unsafe or following an incident. Once triggered, sopp+sopp’s monitoring team is immediately notified, a 15-second video clip is captured, and we make direct contact with the driver to check their wellbeing. All events are logged and shared with the relevant fleet manager to ensure full follow-up and support.
Proactive Investigation of Unreported Incidents
If we receive notification of an incident that hasn’t been reported by the driver, for example, from a third party, or telematics alert, our team investigates proactively. Using location data and vehicle tracking, we identify relevant vehicles and retrieve footage to determine if involvement occurred. If video is unavailable, we escalate the report, ensuring every incident is reviewed and handled appropriately.
How sopp+sopp’s fleet video monitoring service works
We provide full support from the moment an incident is detected, whether it's reported by the driver, triggered automatically by the camera system, or received via third-party notification.
1. We’re notified of the incident
Incidents can be raised with our video monitoring team in three ways:
Automatically triggered by the video/telematics system when an impact or driving event is detected
Reported manually by the driver after a collision or concerning event
Via a notification from a third party (e.g., insurer, claims handler, or member of the public)
As soon as we’re alerted, we open a case and begin reviewing the available footage and data.
2. We respond with fast safety interventions
If there are any concerns about driver safety, such as a Lone Driver alert or signs of a serious incident, our team takes immediate action. This may include contacting the driver, alerting the depot, or escalating directly to the emergency services. Driver wellbeing is always our first priority.
3. We retrieve & review footage instantly
Our team retrieves footage from all available camera angles to build a complete understanding of the incident. We don’t wait around for footage - we actively source and review it from all available camera angles, ensuring nothing is missed. The footage is assessed in detail to determine the timeline, cause, and severity of the incident.
4. We use the video evidence to support the claim
Once the footage has been reviewed, we add a clear summary of findings and ensure it is added to our claims management system and available to support the full claims process. This ensures the footage is used effectively to reduce costs, resolve liability, protect the driver, and support swift, fair claims handling. Where required, we support any further investigation or evidence-gathering needed.
Protect your fleet with real-time video monitoring
As driver safety becomes a growing focus for fleet operators, having the right technology and processes in place is essential. A professional video monitoring service not only helps protect drivers in the moment - especially in high-risk or lone-driver situations - it also provides the evidence needed to make fast, informed decisions when incidents occur.
By actively reviewing incident footage and supporting accurate liability assessment, video monitoring plays a vital role in reducing the impact of fraudulent or misdirected third-party claims. The result is greater control over risk, improved claims defensibility, and measurable cost savings across your operation.
